天狗の棲む山 The mountain where tengu merges The Last Sacred Place of Shugen-dou
‘ “Shu” means painful observation and rigorous asceticism, and “Gen” is the embodiment of virtue.

“Dou” is the way to embody the virtue by accumulating the merits of painful and rigorous training.’

The practitioners chant in turn the Sutra, “Prajñā-pāramitā-hṛdaya”, day and night without changing clothes for five days. They abstain from eating, cut off from the secular world, place themselves in the withered mountains in winter, and spend their time introspection and contemplation.
This is a collection of documentary works in which Masuura, who became the first photographer to be allowed to take pictures during this ritual called “Discipline that no one has ever seen” on Mt. Hiko in Fukuoka.
